Comments on Our 5th District Race
Friends,
The recent campaign financing scandal enveloping Chris Donovan’s campaign for Congress leaves the 5th District Democrat- endorsed candidate — as well as the other contenders for the Democrat nomination — in the damaged and vulnerable position of having to explain a variety of ethical and legal issues related to their candidacies. If Donovan’s record of huge tax hikes and big government spending wasn’t bad enough, this egregious breach of the public trust by his campaign for Congress could well prove to be a mortal blow.
And you can help. Will you consider a one-time secure online donation of $25, $50, or even $100 to help us send a message to Speaker Donovan and his friends that Connecticut voters won’t stand for corruption?
Another Democrat in the field, Elizabeth Esty also will have ethical questions to answer after taking campaign donations from Connecticut utility company executives – the same utilities her husband Daniel Esty regulates in his position as the Commissioner of the State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
The campaign donations of the third Democrat contender, Dan Roberti, are heavily tied to Washington insiders and lobbyists. A relative political newcomer, Roberti has nonetheless already mastered the art of soliciting the special interests who make their livelihoods off Washington politicians and candidates.
This pay-to-play kind of activity strikes at the heart of our democratic system. It clearly demonstrates that Connecticut is not “open for business” as much as it is up for sale by these Democrat candidates. And it casts a bright light on the insidious influence that Connecticut’s imperial government unions play in the legislative process. There can be no doubt that their undue influence over Democrat politicians holds back Connecticut’s prosperity.
It all adds up to Democrat records that will be hard to defend, which is good news for our strong field of Republican contenders in the 5th District. Between now and November, our Republican candidates will be emphasizing Republican solutions to the economy, job creation and the failed policies of the Obama Administration.
Help us get this message out and fight against the corrupt “politics as usual” by making a secure one-time online donation of $25, $50, or even $100 today.
Our candidates will work hard to draw attention to the woeful records of their Democrat opponents on the issues that matter most to the voters of the 5th District – and they will be demanding answers to questions about the ethical lapses, mismanagement and potential instances of legal wrong-doing within the Democrats’ campaigns.
On to victory,
Jerry Labriola, Jr.
State Chairman, Connecticut Republican Party
