Sign the Petition – Tell Rep. Hewett to Resign

Monday, March 4th, 2013

As you probably have already heard, on Wednesday, February 20th, State Representative Ernest Hewett made an offensive and sexually harassing remark to a 17 year-old intern during a committee hearing at the State Capitol.

The intern had been explaining to the committee that her experience helped her to conquer her shyness and also her fear of snakes. According to an audiotape, Rep. Hewett responded by saying: “If you’re bashful, I got a snake sitting under my desk here.”

The Democratic leadership in the legislature responded by stripping Hewett of his largely ceremonial leadership role–less than a slap on the wrist. Governor Malloy and others have said they’re satisfied with this punishment, but I believe it falls short.

This weekend the New Haven Register said that “[Hewett] should resign from the General Assembly, and his colleagues from both parties should help push him out the door.”

I couldn’t agree more. Sign the online petition today and join us in sending a clear message to Representative Hewett that misconduct like this will not be tolerated from our legislators.
